About Kim Pohlman, principal of Wellables
Kim Pohlman is a food industry veteran by profession, and a “foodie” by nature. She is a principal of Wellables, a consulting firm that manages strategic marketing projects for the food industry. Her projects include:
- Numerous ingredient and technology market analyses for major investment firms, ingredient, and food companies
- Gap analyses of product lines, and subsequent launching of successful products
- Brand management of consumer packaged goods, including creating a new category in sports nutrition
- Establishing a sustainability plan for a major prepared-foods supplier
- Creation foods used to introduce ingredients to food manufacturers (i.e. IFT annual meeting) or to consumers (i.e. Mr. Olympia fitness expo). Examples include a chewing gum to showcase delivery options of a nutraceutical with improved solubility; a shelf stable, microwaveable high protein chili showcasing “clean label convenience”; a bacon and egg breakfast bar showcasing reduced sugar technology.
- Identification, targeting and developing niche food markets for clients, including university football programs, weight management clinics, “moms’ network”. Obtained speaking engagements and identified social media influencers in building these markets for companies.
Prior to Wellables, Kim worked for major food ingredient companies in variety of capacities, including R&D, sales and marketing, business development, and general management. As Director of Nutritional Ingredients for the McNeil division of Johnson and Johnson, she managed the joint venture between Neose Technologies and Johnson and Johnson. The unit developed a carbohydrate synthesis technology into a platform of functional food products oriented towards health and wellness, such as SplendaTM and Probiotica TM with FOS. She has also worked for Unigen, focused on marketing a pipeline of plant extracts into therapeutic agents for the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement market.
Kim received her BS in Soil Chemistry from University of Florida, and her MBA from Benedictine University. She was Secretary of the Sales and Marketing Division of the Institute of Food Technologists from 2002-2008 and continues to be an active volunteer. She can be found contentedly munching all types at food, at any given time of the day, while voraciously reading about ingredients, food, health, and wellness.
